Tapkeshwar Temple

Tapkeshwar Temple-This temple is built on the banks of a small river in the Garhi Cantt area, 5.5 km from Dehradun District Dehradun City Bus Stand. It is easily accessible by road. Here water droplets continue to drip from a rock on the Shivling located in a cave. That is why it is named Tapkeshwar. People gather here in large numbers in the fair organized at the festival of Shivaratri and pay homage to the Shiva idol situated here.

Tapkeshwar Temple in Dehradun, otherwise called Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, is one of the most acclaimed sanctuaries devoted to Shiva. Situated on the forest side, the main Shivalinga in the temple is inside a natural cave. The water continuously pours down from the roof of the cave passing over the Shivling, creating an interesting spectacle.

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple has its importance due to having a natural Shiva Linga in a cave nearby. For a long time, the river was flowing through caves and water droplets were continuously falling on the Shiva Linga. It became a place of reverence for the local people. It is also believed that it was used as a residence by the Pandavas of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, written by Veda Vyasa, and Guru Dronacharya, a respected teacher of the Kauravas. Thus the cave was named after him as Drona Cave.
